WVU football: Passing game improvements a focal point of bye week | WVU Gameday

As of this week, the good vibes stemming from the West Virginia University football team’s 27-21 double-overtime win over Baylor have faded and it’s back to the task at hand coming off a bye week for the Mountaineers.

That task is a tall one and unique one and it will begin on Saturday at Milan Puskar Stadium as WVU (2-1 overall, 1-1 Big 12 Conference) welcomes in Kansas (0-3, 0-2) for a noon kickoff. The game will air on Fox.

“It’s really unique. We’re the only ones,” WVU coach Neal Brown said of a stretch of five games in five weeks that now lies squarely in front of his team, a span that no other team in the Big 12 will face this season.

While there were obviously positive takeaways from the Mountaineers’ conquest of Baylor, there were plenty of evident deficiencies as well, particularly on offense and, more specifically,

The coronavirus ground game gamble hits the homestretch

MILWAUKEE — Nowhere else may the pandemic-year ground game contrast between President Donald Trump and Joe Biden be more apparent than in Wisconsin’s Waukesha County, part of the trio of suburban counties surrounding Milwaukee.

Trump won this part of the state in 2016, but his margin was significantly below that of 2012 Republican nominee Mitt Romney. It is in counties like Waukesha — which has itself become a notorious catchword in some quarters for any potentially contest-defining bellwether area — where Biden hopes to cut into Trump’s previous margin and reclaim the state.

In late September, the Trump campaign’s website advertised a “MAGA Meet-Up” at the Republican Party of Waukesha County office to “connect with other supporters in the area and recruit new volunteers.”

Although the online description nodded to a virtual event option, it was unclear how to take advantage of it. When NBC News arrived at the office,

UCF football kickoff time set for home game vs. Tulane

The UCF football team’s second home game of the season against Tulane on Oct. 24 will kick off at 2 p.m. and air on ESPN2.

It’s the 10th meeting in the series between the two programs, with the Knights holding a 7-2 advantage that includes last season’s 34-31 road win.

There will be limited attendance at all UCF home games this season due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Knights will welcome 25% capacity at the Bounce House, limiting the crowds to a little more than 11,000.

The announced crowd for the home opener against Tulsa on Oct. 3 was 8,874.

UCF looks to start a new winning streak at home after the Golden Hurricane snapped the program’s 21-game streak with a 34-26 win. The Knights are 4-0 against Tulane in the Bounce House.

LOOK: Yankees’ Brett Gardner robs Rays’ Randy Arozarena of home run in ALDS Game 5

screenshot-2020-10-09-at-8-48-22-gardner-pm.jpg

Rare is the pitcher who’s been able to keep Randy Arozarena of the Rays in check this postseason, so Yankees fly-catcher Brett Gardner decided to take on the mission himself. In the sixth inning of Friday night’s decisive ALDS Game 5 (NYY-TB GameTracker), Arozarena appeared to have homered off New York ace Gerrit Cole to break a 1-1 tie.

However, Gardner out in left field was unwilling to accommodate:

That left Arozarena’s bat at 99.6 mph and with a launch angle of 38 degrees. That launch angle is a little higher than optimal, and in this instance it was probably high enough to get caught up in the San Diego evening marine layer. Arozarena appeared to think it was gone off the bat, but that turned out to be not the case by a hairsbreadth or so.

Anyhow, that’s not the typical home run robbery, as Gardner didn’t undertake the

Rays knock off Yankees in do-or-die Game 5, advance to ALCS

CLOSE

SportsPulse: The Tampa Bay Rays dispatched the New York Yankees and will now face the Houston Astros in an ALCS which promises to feature a lot of fire power.

USA TODAY

SAN DIEGO — They could walk the city streets in the Gaslamp Quarter and not a soul would recognize them.

They are as anonymous as the seafood taco vendors in town.

They are the Tampa Bay Rays, and you better start to get to know them.

The Rays finally knocked off the bullies off the AL East, the New York Yankees, 2-1, Friday night, advancing to the American League Championship Series for only the second time in franchise history.

And, oh, how it was only fitting that Mike Brosseau was the hero, hitting the biggest home run in Rays’ history off Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman in a 10-pitch at-bat in the eighth inning.

It was a month ago,

ALDS Game 4: Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton can tie MLB postseason home run record

New York Yankees DH Giancarlo Stanton can write his name in MLB’s postseason record book with a home run in Game 4 of the American League Division Series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. And he’s not alone. Here are the details from Yankees PR:

Giancarlo Staton

– Has homered in five straight postseason games, becoming the first Yankee in franchise history to accomplish the feat (previous: Lou Gehrig and Reggie Jackson in four straight)

– His five-game HR streak is tied with George Springer (5 games from 2017-18) and Carlos Beltrán (5 games in 2004) for the second-longest in Major League history, trailing only Daniel Murphy (6 games in 2015).

Yankees takeaways from 9-3 win in ALDS Game 1 over Rays, including a home run party

Giancarlo Stanton celebrates his grand slam in Game 1 of ALDS
Giancarlo Stanton celebrates his grand slam in Game 1 of ALDS

The Yankees homered their way to a 9-3 win over their division-rival Tampa Bay Rays in Game 1 of the ALDS. >> Box Score

Takeaways from Monday’s game

1) Gerrit Cole has been hurt by the homer all season long, and prior to this game, the Rays accounted for five of his 14 allowed. Well, Randy Arozarena and Ji-Man Choi added two more to the list. Both homers came off the fastball – Arozarena’s a solo shot in the bottom of the first inning while Choi’s was a two-run blast in the bottom of the fourth – that caught the middle of the plate.

But the Yankees’ offense would help out Cole (more on that in just a bit), allowing him to leave the game after six innings with the lead. He also helped himself in the bottom of

Broncos approved to host 5,700 fans for each remaining home game

The Broncos announced Monday they have been permitted to host at least 5,700 fans for their final six home games this year.

In a letter to season-ticket holders, the Broncos said they have received approval from the state of Colorado and the Department of Public Health and Environment, which is an extension of the guidelines used for the Sept. 27 home game against Tampa Bay.

“Working together closely with the state and public health experts, the Broncos will continue to re-evaluate fan attendance for future home games and will adjust based on the latest recommendations from health officials,” the statement read.

Beginning with the Oct. 18 game against Miami, season-ticket members will have the opportunity to purchase a six-game ticket package (decided by priority number). The team will also reserve selected single-game tickets for an Oct. 13 presale. Seats will be sold in “pods” of two and four tickets in

A’s, Astros play home run derby in Houston’s Game 1 win in L.A.

Welcome to the new Launching Pad?

Dodger Stadium is more than 1,000 miles away from Coors Field, but it sure resembled the notorious home run haven Monday for the A’s and Astros in Game 1 of the American League Division Series.

Balls were flying over the fence early and often as the teams combined for five home runs — three by the A’s — with just 3 1/2 innings completed on a sunny, 90-degree Los Angeles afternoon. In all, there were six home runs hit in Houston’s 10-5 victory.

Although Khris Davis, Sean Murphy and Matt Olson are probably the physically strongest A’s hitters, they each got a bit of a boost from the elements while blasting home runs off Houston starter Lance McCullers Jr., who hadn’t given up an earned run in his past four starts.
